Semarang, dtap.undip.ac.id, – Tomohiko Yoshida, an expert professor from Ritsumeikan University, Japan, took part in the dissertation examination of one of the Doctoral Candidates of S3 Architecture and Urban Science Study Program of FT Undip. Along with Prof. Yoshida, Prof. Antariksa Sudikno from Brawijaya University, Malang, was also present (online). June Ekawati, lecturer and researcher of architecture department from one of the best private universities in Indonesia, successfully defended her dissertation in front of the examiners. The hybrid event, held on Wednesday (15/6) at the Smart Class Room, Faculty of Engineering, Diponegoro University, also confirmed June Ekawati as a Doctor in Architecture and Urban Science.

June’s research, entitled “Vulnerability-Based Settlement Adaptation in the Disaster Affected Area of Lapindo Mudflow, Sidoarjo, East Java” is located in the former Lapindo mudflow area in Sidoarjo, East Java. After the mudflow tragedy a dozen years ago, Jun was initiated to examine the research empirically. In fact, from a scientific perspective, there is a gap in the theory of architecture and urban science that has the potential to be developed. Some modifications to existing theories and concepts of vulnerability such as indicators and assessment techniques, as well as forms of adaptation in settlements as individual and collective community responses to vulnerability in areas affected by the Lapindo mudflow disaster can fill the existing theoretical gaps, so that the results of this research are useful in minimizing disaster impacts and increasing the resilience of urban settlements from disaster risk, said June.

The success of June Ekawati also pioneered the quality of education in the study program internationally. Following the ASIIN international accreditation visitation (19-21/1) PDIAP FT Undip for the second time involved external examiners from abroad, the first time was during the doctoral examination of promovenda Nurrahmi Kartikawati with examiner Dr. Norhayati Mahyuddin from the University of Malaya, Malaysia. Prof Agung Wibowo (Dean of the Faculty of Engineering), Prof Atik Suprapti (Head of PDIAP Department of the Faculty of Engineering) and also the internal examiners who were present in person (Prof Gagoek Hardiman/Promoter, Dr Edward E. Pandelaki/Co-Promoter, Prof Nany Yuliastuti, and Dr Agung Dwiyanto) for Jun’s success in her doctoral studies.
