The objectives of this dissertation are: firstly, to understand the meaning built into the phenomenon of spatial resilience in Lasem Chinatown which is able to resist and respond to shocks (both internal and external); Second, to determine the contribution of the shape and space of the area in maintaining Lasem Chinatown; Third, to find out the things behind its survival; and fourthly, to find out structural theoretical icons that can explain the phenomenon of the survival of the Lasem Chinatown area. This research uses a naturalistic qualitative research paradigm with a phenomenological approach and inductive methods. The analysis process was carried out based on the results of observations from the observation unit which produced information units which were organized into overarching themes in the spatial context of the Lasem Chinatown Area. For this reason, efforts are needed to categorize information units based on factors, content/substance which leads to the formation of themes. This research produces a theory of continuity and change based on collective consciousness which strengthens the theory of place in urban planning and design and strengthens the theory of resilience, adaptation and transformation. The research findings are “Theory of Continuity and Change based on Collective Awareness”, this is in line with the UNESCO concept where the preservation of historic cities from various parts of the world must be packaged in the context of a historical urban landscape.
