Augustinus Madyana Putra, a man born in Yogyakarta, has successfully completed his dissertation manuscript and defended it, with the title “Strengthening Internal Worksheets through Manual Sketching Activities in the Process of Learning and Designing Architecture” through a closed doctoral promotion session led by Prof. Dr. Ir. Atiek Suprapti, MT., on March 16 2023, with Cumlaude predicate. The closed doctoral promotion session was held offline and was declared the 79th doctorate in the Architectural and Urban Science Doctoral Program (PDIAP), Faculty of Engineering, Diponegoro University. This dissertation research was intensively supervised by Prof. Dr-Ing. Ir. Gagoek Hardiman, as promoter, and Dr. Ir. Agung Budi Sardjono, MT., as co-promoter. Meanwhile, the dissertation manuscript as the final result of the dissertation research was tested by Dr. Ir. Agung Dwiyanto., MSA, and Dr. Ir. Budi Sudarwanto., M.Si, as the internal examiner team at Diponegoro University. Apart from that, Prof. Dr-Ing. Ir. Widjaja Martokusumo was involved in testing the dissertation manuscript, as an external examiner from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB).

For 3 years and 7 months, Augustinus Madyana Putra, who was born on August 14 1973, has completed his lecture and research process in the field of architectural science which focuses on architectural design methods. The research topic raised is the role of manual sketching in the learning process and architectural design process. This research is exploratory in nature and uses a case study method. Information was extracted from several sources with selection criteria: 1) professional architects from various generations (baby boomers generation, generation X, generation Y), 2) architects who have received awards, 3) architects who studied architecture in Yogyakarta, and 4 ) architect who has carried out the design process in Cultural Heritage Areas in Yogyakarta. Data analysis uses conventional content analysis through stages namely data management, coding, preparation of themes and descriptions, formulation of findings, discussion and reporting, and validation.

The research results state that manual sketches have an important role in the learning process and architectural design process. This sketching activity strengthens a person’s internal worksheet definitions. This internal worksheet acts as a personal perception screen on sketches as a learning process, and as a personal projection screen on sketches as part of the design process. In the architectural learning process, sketches help strengthen visual memory, strengthen recognition of building anatomy, strengthen personal character. During the design process, sketches help in the brainstorming stage, speed of analysis, and ease of communication. When related to the domain of the architect generation, the baby boomers and generation technological limitations. Sketching activities have deep meaning for those involved and are very helpful in creating architectural tectonics, determining the proportions of building faces, and creating ornamentation that adapts to the character of local architecture.

During his studies at PDIAP, Augustinus MP, who works as a lecturer at Atma Jaya University Yogyakarta, has produced three international scientific publications indexed by Scopus, one national scientific publication Sinta 4, and participated in international seminars. The international scientific publications that have been produced are “The Effect of Manual Sketching on Architectural Design Process in the Digital Era”, published in the Journal of Theoretical and Applied Information Technology (indexed by Scopus Q4); “The Role of Manual Sketch Uploads on Instagram to Understand Place Identities: a Systematic Literature Review”, published in the Journal of Theoretical and Applied Information Technology (indexed by Scopus Q4), “Understanding Identity of a Tourist Region Through Travelsketch Event”, published in the journal Ecology, Environment and Conservation (Scopus Q4 indexed).
